Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The minimalist lifestyle is gaining traction among Generation Z as young people increasingly prioritize quality over quantity in their purchases. Recent surveys shows a growing number of people are reducing personal consumption to achieve financial stability and emotional well-being.

According to Wolipop, a 2024 study by Deloitte Global titled Gen Z and Millennial Survey found that many Gen Z individuals are embracing minimalism to manage stress, support sustainability, and improve their finances. Another report by GlobalWebIndex highlighted that for many, minimalism helps strike a balance between mental health and the demands of modern life.

Minimalism, rooted in the philosophy of simple living, began gaining global attention in the 2010s, heavily inspired by Japanese practices such as Marie Kondo’s method of decluttering. The trend emphasizes focusing on essential needs, curbing overconsumption, and organizing life more efficiently.

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have amplified the movement, with content focusing on decluttering, tiny living, and mindfulness. These platforms promote the idea of consciously simplifying life and focusing on what truly matters.

“It’s about adopting a mindset of quality over quantity. You invest in fewer, high-quality items that last longer instead of accumulating cheaper products that may not serve you well in the long run,” said the founder of Lyfe With Less, a minimalist lifestyle platform, as reported by Detik.

For those looking to adopt a minimalist lifestyle, experts suggest starting with these five practical steps:

  1. Declutter Space

The surroundings often reflect someone’s state of mind. A cluttered room can lead to a cluttered mind. Begin by saying goodbye to stacks of clothes you haven’t worn in years or dusty trinkets. Simplifying your space creates a calm corner where you can think, create, and recharge.

  1. Embrace a Minimalist Wardrobe

Instead of accumulating dozens of outfits that rarely wear, investing in a few versatile classics that can be easily mixed and matched were preferable. Not only does this simplify morning outfit decisions for work or school, but it also supports sustainable fashion practices.

  1. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity

In an era of fast fashion and fleeting trends, minimalism encourages mindful consumption. Invest in durable, high-quality products instead of constantly chasing the latest fads. This approach reduces waste and supports a more sustainable future.

  1. Maximize the Use of What You Already Own

Minimalist lifestyle could also be expressed through using items to their fullest potential before replacing them. Whether it’s clothing, skincare, gadgets, or household goods.

  1. Digital Detox

Minimalism isn’t limited to physical spaces; it extends to digital life. Unfollow accounts that don’t inspire, delete unused apps, and unsubscribe from countless newsletters. A decluttered virtual space allows someone to focus on content that enriches their life.

The minimalist lifestyle offers a pathway to greater financial freedom, emotional clarity, and a sustainable future. For Gen Z, it’s not just about having less but living more intentionally.
