Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his vision of future technology’s evolution, predicting that smart glasses will become the dominant computing platform, surpassing smartphones, which have long been a central part of modern life.
In a recent interview, Zuckerberg emphasized that new technology doesn’t completely eliminate the old, but rather coexists and shifts usage patterns.
The tech giant’s CEO compared the potential shift to how mobile phones gradually integrated the functions of computers, eventually consolidating everything into a single device.
“We saw how mobile devices became the primary computing platform, but computers didn’t vanish entirely. The same will happen with smart glasses, smartphones will still be around, but their use will decline,” Zuckerberg explained.
He elaborated that while people continue to use computers today, the majority of their activities have shifted to smartphones. Zuckerberg believes a similar transition will occur with smart glasses, which will gradually take over many of the functions currently handled by smartphones in daily life.
Within the next decade, Zuckerberg predicts that smart glasses will become the dominant platform.
“Maybe sometime in the 2020s or 2030s, we’ll be pulling our phones out of our pockets less often, as more tasks will be handled through smart glasses,” he said optimistically.

Zuckerberg’s confidence in the future of smart glasses is rooted in Meta’s efforts to develop augmented reality (AR) glasses, which they hope will become mainstream and widely accepted. In a separate interview with The Verge, he noted that with the widespread use of conventional glasses, the transition to smart glasses may be more seamless for many people.
“There are already more than 1 to 2 billion people wearing glasses every day. Just like the shift to smartphones, I believe those who wear glasses will transition to smart glasses over the next decade,” he added.
Zuckerberg also predicted that while early adopters of smart glasses would primarily be those who already wear glasses, the technology’s added value will attract even those who don’t currently use them.
With this ambitious vision, Meta appears to be doubling down on innovation in AR and smart glasses, which they see as the future of global computing. The company launched its Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses line in 2023, and with their smart glasses already on the market, Zuckerberg envisions them as the next great computing platform.
