Sweden, Indonesia Sentinel — At least 11 people, including the suspected shooter, were killed in a mass shooting at Risbergska Campus, an educational center in Örebro, Sweden, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The tragedy marks the deadliest mass shooting in Sweden’s history, sending shockwaves across the nation and Europe.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident as “brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people.” Speaking at a press conference in Stockholm, Kristersson expressed the nation’s grief and stated, “Many questions remain unanswered, and I cannot provide those answers yet. However, there will come a time when we will understand what happened, how it occurred, and the potential motives behind it. Please refrain from speculation.”
The attack took place on the outskirts of Örebro, about 200 kilometers west of Stockholm. Risbergska Campus primarily serves students over the age of 20. While gun violence in schools is rare in Sweden, recent years have seen isolated incidents involving knives or axes.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called the shooting a “shocking event that has shaken our society to its core.” He noted that while Swedes often read about such violence elsewhere, there was a belief that it couldn’t happen in their own country.
European leaders also expressed their condolences. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on social media, “What happened today in Örebro is truly horrific. Such violence and terror have no place in our societies—especially not in schools. In these difficult times, we stand with the people of Sweden.”
Local police chief Roberto Eid Forest reported that the extent of the damage at the crime scene made it challenging to confirm the exact number of fatalities. He noted that the death toll could rise and confirmed that the suspected shooter was among the dead. Authorities believe the gunman acted alone and had no prior criminal record.

At present, there is no indication of terrorism links, and the police have not disclosed a motive. “Of course, we all want to understand why this happened, what occurred, and what motivated the perpetrator,” Kristersson said. “We must wait for those answers in due time; the picture will become clearer.”
Following the shooting, police raided the suspect’s residence, but details of their findings remain undisclosed. Eid Forest stated that there were no warning signs prior to the attack. Authorities are working to identify the victims.
Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf issued a statement praising the police, first responders, and medical personnel who responded to the tragedy. “With sadness and dismay, my family and I have received information about the horrific atrocity in Örebro,” he said. “We extend our condolences tonight to the families and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts are also with the injured, their relatives, and all those affected.”
