Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has partnered with Blumhouse Productions, the Hollywood studio known for hit horror films like The Purge and Get Out, to test its new generative AI video model, Movie Gen.
This collaboration follows Meta’s recent release of the AI tool, which is designed to create realistic video and audio clips based solely on user prompts.
Meta claims that Movie Gen has the potential to rival the offerings of other major AI companies such as OpenAI and ElevenLabs.
Meta announced in a blog post that Blumhouse has chosen filmmakers Aneesh Chaganty, The Spurlock Sisters, and Casey Affleck to experiment with Movie Gen, integrating AI-generated clips into their short films. Chaganty’s film will be featured on Meta’s Movie Gen website, while works from Affleck and The Spurlock Sisters are expected to follow soon.
Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse, praised the opportunity for creative professionals to engage with this cutting-edge technology, while emphasizing that artists remain the heart of the industry. “We welcome the chance for some of them to test this advanced technology and provide feedback on its strengths and weaknesses while it’s still in development,” Blum said, as cited from Reuters.

Meta’s partnership with Blumhouse signals the tech giant’s desire to collaborate with the creative industry, which has expressed concerns about generative AI, particularly regarding copyright issues. Various copyright holders have filed lawsuits against major tech companies, including Meta, accusing them of unlawfully using their works to train AI systems.
Meta, however, argues that its AI training practices are protected under copyright fair use. Nonetheless, the company has shown a willingness to pay for certain types of content to fuel its AI endeavors. Last month, Meta announced deals with actors such as Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, and John Cena to lend their voices to Meta’s AI chatbots, highlighting its broader AI ambitions.
