Jakarta, Indoensia Sentinel — The night sky will treat stargazers to a spectacular show, the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year on November 4, 2025.

This event marks the second in a trio of consecutive supermoons closing out 2025 and is expected to be one of the most dazzling lunar displays in recent years.

The upcoming supermoon is also known as the “Beaver Moon,” a traditional name rooted in Native American folklore. The term refers to the time of year when beavers build their lodges in preparation for winter and when early trappers set their beaver traps before the rivers froze.

While the moon’s increased size may appear subtle to the naked eye, its brightness will be unmistakable. The full moon will shine brightly enough to cast faint shadows on the ground and illuminate the night from dusk until dawn.

Not all supermoons are created equal, this one will orbit about 17,000 miles (27,000 kilometers) closer to Earth than usual, making it appear roughly 7% larger and up to 16% brighter than an average full moon.

Scientifically, a supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its full phase at the same time it’s at perigee, the closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This alignment, known as a “perigee full moon,” produces the most visually striking lunar events.

The November 2025 full moon will reach peak brightness almost simultaneously with its closest approach to Earth, creating one of the most intense supermoons in recent memory. Its extra brilliance will likely wash out faint stars and produce visible shadows, a rare effect only seen during the most extreme supermoons.

“The Moon won’t appear this large and bright again until November 24, 2026,” according to recent astronomical reports.

Supermoon Tides May Trigger Coastal Flooding in Indonesia

In Indonesia, however, the supermoon could pose a natural hazard. Several coastal regions across the country are expected to experience tidal flooding, or banjir rob, through Monday, November 24, 2025.

“The perigee and full moon phase occurring on November 5, 2025, may increase maximum sea levels,” Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said in a statement on its official Instagram account.

According to BMKG’s tide monitoring data, coastal flooding is possible in several provinces, including:

  1. Aceh
  2. North Sumatra
  3. West Sumatra
  4. Riau Islands
  5. Bangka Belitung Islands
  6. Lampung
  7. Banten
  8. Jakarta
  9. West Java
  10. Central Java
  11. East Java
  12. Bali
  13. West Nusa Tenggara
  14. North Kalimantan
  15. South Kalimantan
  16. West Kalimantan
  17. North Sulawesi
  18. Maluku

BMKG warned that high tides could disrupt activities in coastal and harbor areas, including loading and unloading operations, coastal settlements, and salt farming or aquaculture operations.

“The public is advised to remain alert and take precautions against rising sea levels and to follow the latest maritime weather updates from BMKG,” the agency said.
