Bandung, IndonesiaSentinel.com — Indonesia came out as the biggest supplier of Swallow nest, a commodity considered a luxury and highly prized in several Asian countries. These bird nests, known for their numerous health benefits, including boosting immunity, improving organ function, and preventing aging, are in high demand worldwide.
According to CNBC, Indonesian Trade Minister Muhammad Luthfi stated that Indonesia is one of the world’s leading producers of Swallow nest, contributing nearly 80% of global demand. The export value of Indonesia’s bird nests has shown a significant upward trend. Increased 48.5% compared to 2019, bird nest exports in 2020 reached $540.4 million.
In 2023, Indonesia’s export volume reached 1,335 tons, valued at $633.25 million, or approximately IDR 9.81 trillion (with an exchange rate of $1 = IDR 15,945). This bird nest is equal to a price of IDR 7.35 million per kilogram.
China, Hong Kong, and Singapore are the primary markets for Indonesian Swallow nest. Data from 2023 showed, exports to Hong Kong amounted to 630.9 tons, valued at $77.137 million, while exports to Singapore totaled 36 tons, with a value of $17.588 million.

However, Indonesia’s journey in exporting swallow nests has not been smooth every time. Indonesia got banned from China back in 2010. Due to the concerns over avian influenza and high nitrite levels in Indonesian bird nests, China imposed a ban on direct imports. After five years of long negotiations, Indonesia was able to resume direct exports to China in 2015. However, China has set some strict conditions, including a maximum nitrite content of 30 ppm in the nests.
Indonesia’s dominance in the global Swallow nest market is now facing competition from Malaysia and Thailand. Despite this, Indonesia continues to lead with larger export volumes and a reputation for higher product quality.
To maintain and even strengthen its position as a major exporter, Indonesia must focus on improving both the quality and quantity of its production. The government and industry players must collaborate to streamline the licensing process and ensure compliance with international standards. By doing so, Indonesia can maintain its position and continue to be a major producer of Swallow nests in the global market.
