Jakarta, Indonesai Sentinel — Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has once again sparked public debate over his use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a social media post marking National Defense Day.
The post, shared on his Instagram account on Thursday, December 19, 2024, featured Gibran in a military uniform with his AI-generated face speaking directly to viewers. The short video included the caption: “Happy National Defense Day 2024! Stay spirited!”.
In a brief statement accompanying the video, Gibran said: “Together, let’s create a more advanced, resilient, and prosperous Indonesia, with a burning love for our homeland in every step we take.”
The caption of the post emphasized the significance of National Defense Day, encouraging nationalism, unity, and safeguarding Indonesia’s sovereignty: “Let’s ignite the spirit of defending our nation for an Advanced Indonesia.”
According to Liputan6, The video quickly went viral, generating a mix of reactions from netizens in the comments section. Some praised the use of AI technology:
“Awesome, Mr. Vice President! Embracing AI as a product of modern times,” one user commented.
Others criticized the decision, suggesting collaboration with local digital artists instead:
“Why not work with local digital artists instead, Mr. VP? That would showcase homegrown talent. Or is that considered outdated compared to AI?”
Criticism continued with another user writing: “Can’t you shoot a regular video yourself? Why rely on AI for this? This is worse than a pre-written speech.”
Another commenter found humor in the situation: “Sir, I laughed all day after watching the video you posted yesterday!”

This is not the first time Gibran’s social media activity has drawn attention. Earlier, on December 8, 2024, his TikTok account went viral for using a popular video template to promote Pesona Indonesia (Indonesia’s tourism charm).
While some applauded the creative approach, others criticized rising domestic flight ticket prices. “Lower the domestic flight fares! How can traveling around our own country be more expensive than flying abroad?” one netizen quipped.
