Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has reshuffled his cabinet, replacing five ministers including Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, a move that marks a major shake-up in the government’s economic leadership.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed the changes at a press conference on Monday, September 8, saying the president had decided to “adjust the composition of the Red and White Cabinet in several ministerial posts.”
No official explanation was given for why Mulyani, who had served as finance minister since 2016 and was widely respected by international investors, was removed. Hadi said the decision came after “a series of considerations, inputs, and evaluations.”
Mulyani’s post will be filled by Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, the former chairman of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).

The reshuffle comes after weeks of political turbulence. Mulyani was recently criticized during demonstrations in late August, with protesters accusing her of pursuing policies that failed to meet public expectations. On August 31, her residence was targeted by looters during unrest.
In a social media post, Mulyani expressed her dismay over the attack, lamenting the loss of a personal painting she described as deeply meaningful. “That flower painting has vanished, just like the sense of security, legal certainty, and humanity that should prevail in Indonesia,” she wrote.
Last week, she also thanked Indonesians for their feedback, whether “criticism, satire, curses, or advice” saying it was all part of the process of building the nation. The message was widely interpreted as a signal she was prepared to step aside.
Still, President Prabowo has not publicly detailed his reasons for replacing her, leaving questions about the future direction of Indonesia’s economic policy.
