Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Bank Indonesia (BI) has officially announced that its Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) can now be used in Japan starting August 17, 2025, marking the system’s first expansion beyond ASEAN.
Governor Perry Warjiyo said the initiative reflects Indonesia’s efforts to broaden digital payment innovation and make cross-border transactions easier for its citizens.
“Since its launch six years ago, QRIS has been a game changer for the digital payment ecosystem and has strengthened Indonesia’s economic sovereignty, now with 57 million users,” Perry said in Jakarta on Sunday (August 17), as reported by Antara.
The implementation in Japan will allow Indonesian travelers to make purchases at 35 merchants by scanning JPQR Global codes with domestic payment apps, including mobile banking platforms and e-wallets such as DANA, GoPay, Netzme Pay, Finpay, ShopeePay, and MotionPay.
Perry added that BI plans to gradually expand the number of participating merchants in Japan, making transactions more convenient for Indonesians abroad.
In the next phase, QRIS integration will be extended to merchants in Indonesia, enabling Japanese visitors to use their domestic payment applications to transact in the country.

Besides the official implementations in Japan, Bank Indonesia has officially begun QRIS trial runs with China, expanding efforts to build seamless cross-border payment systems.
The initiative is aimed at making trade between the two countries more efficient while boosting tourism flows. Governor Perry Warjiyo said he expects the expansion of QRIS cross-border payments with China to move forward once testing and readiness assessments are completed.
“Continuous innovation in QRIS features is underway to broaden acceptance and support digital financial and economic inclusion. One such innovation is cross-border QRIS,” Perry said.
Since its launch in August 2022, cross-border QRIS has already been rolled out in several neighboring countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
