Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) has announced a city-wide initiative to turn off lights for 60 minutes on Saturday, November 9, 2024, as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the capital. The public is encouraged to join this initiative by switching off their home lights for one hour on that date.
“Let’s take part in saving the planet by turning off your household lights for an hour!” a statement from Pemprov DKI Jakarta as reported by Detik.
The initiative will involve turning off lights across various streets and buildings throughout Jakarta. “Together with Pemprov DKI Jakarta, let’s engage in energy-saving actions and reduce carbon emissions in the city,” the statement continued.

This is not the first time Jakarta has undertaken such an initiative. The 60-minute lights-off initiative in Jakarta was previously implemented on June 29, 2024, resulted in significant environmental benefits, including:
- Electricity savings: 69 MWh
- Energy cost reduction: IDR 100,336,598 (approximately USD 6,300)
- Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions: 59.03 tons of CO2 equivalent
On November 9, the one-hour blackout will extend to several commercial, private, and public buildings, including shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and apartments, as well as Pemprov DKI office buildings. However, critical services such as hospitals, health clinics, and emergency facilities will be exempt.
