Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Philippine political scene was shaken on November 23, 2024, when Vice President Sara Duterte made a startling revelation. In a profanity-laced press conference, Duterte admitted to hiring assassins to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta, and Speaker Martin Romualdez if she were assassinated. The declaration has further widened the rift between two of the Philippines’ most powerful political dynasties and prompted heightened security measures around the President and his family.

Sara Duterte Biography

Sara Duterte, known for her fiery rhetoric and decisive actions, is no stranger to controversy. As the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, she has carved out a political career that blends elements of her father’s brash leadership style with her own distinct approach. But who is Sara Duterte, and how did she become a key figure in Philippine politics?

Early Life and Education

Sara Zimmerman Duterte, born on May 31, 1978, in Davao City, grew up in the political limelight as the daughter of Rodrigo Duterte and Elizabeth Zimmerman. Despite her political lineage, young Sara initially aspired to become a pediatrician. However, her plans shifted after an unsuccessful first year in medical school, prompting her to pursue a different path.

She earned a degree in respiratory therapy at San Pedro College in Davao City, which gave her insight into public health. Later, she pursued law studies at San Beda College and San Sebastian College-Recoletos in Manila. After passing the Philippine Bar Examination in 2005, Sara briefly worked at the Philippine Supreme Court, gaining valuable experience in legal and constitutional matters.

Her diverse educational background has been instrumental in shaping her political career. With expertise in both health and law, Sara has approached governance with a unique perspective, balancing social welfare initiatives with a firm grasp of legal frameworks.

Political Ascent

Sara’s political career began in 2007 when she was elected vice mayor of Davao City, serving alongside her father, who was then the city’s mayor. She gained national attention in 2010 when she became Davao City’s first female mayor at the age of 32. Her tenure was marked by bold decisions, including a controversial incident where she physically struck a court sheriff during a forced demolition case. While the incident attracted criticism, it also bolstered her reputation as a leader unafraid to stand up for her constituents.

After stepping away from politics briefly to focus on private law practice, Sara returned as Davao City’s mayor from 2016 to 2022. Under her leadership, the city saw significant improvements in infrastructure, public transportation, and crime reduction programs. Her “Peace911” initiative emphasized dialogue and community empowerment over violence, earning praise for its innovative approach to local security.

Rise to National Politics

In 2022, Sara surprised many by running for vice president instead of president, pairing with Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The Marcos-Duterte tandem secured a landslide victory, signaling broad public support. As vice president, Sara also took on the role of education secretary, overseeing the Department of Education’s “MATATAG Agenda,” which aimed to reform the basic education curriculum.

However, her tenure was not without controversy. Critics questioned her opposition to increasing teachers’ salaries and her allocation of intelligence funds, which she spent within 11 days. By June 2024, Sara resigned as education secretary, citing irreconcilable differences with the Marcos administration.

Tensions with Marcos Jr.

Relations between Sara Duterte and President Marcos Jr. have deteriorated dramatically. Their differences over foreign policy, particularly regarding the South China Sea, and domestic issues like drug enforcement have led to a public feud. The tension escalated when a close associate of Sara’s, Zuleika Lopez, was detained by lawmakers allied with Marcos over allegations of obstructing a congressional inquiry.

This series of events appears to have fueled Sara’s controversial statement about hiring assassins. While her remarks shocked the nation, they underscore the deep divisions within the Marcos and Duterte political camps, two dynasties that have long dominated Philippine politics.

Popularity Amid Controversy

Despite these controversies, Sara Duterte remains one of the most popular politicians in the Philippines. Her approval ratings consistently top national surveys, and many view her as a strong contender for the 2028 presidential race. Her blend of toughness and pragmatism resonates with Filipinos seeking decisive leadership in a country often plagued by political instability.

A Polarizing Legacy

Sara Duterte’s journey reflects the complexities of Philippine politics. While she has been lauded for her innovative programs and commitment to public service, her confrontational style and controversial decisions have sparked heated debates. Her legacy, much like her father’s, will likely be one of both admiration and contention.

As the political landscape of the Philippines continues to evolve, Sara Duterte’s role as a power player is undeniable. Whether she can rise above the controversies and cement her place as a transformative leader remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Sara Duterte is a force to be reckoned with in Philippine politics.
