Serawak, Indonesia Sentinel — Seven Indonesians and a Malaysian citizen tragically lost their lives in a collision on the Pan Borneo Highway, Sarawak, Malaysia, on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The fatal incident unfolded when the victims, traveling in a Perodua Alza vehicle, collided with a truck near the Sungai Nyelong Bridge after a high-speed chase with police.

Police Chase Led to the Crash

Acting Sarikei Police Chief Aswandy Anis stated that the vehicle failed to stop at a checkpoint and was pursued by officers. The chase intensified when the car entered the wrong lane at the Simpang Bulat highway diversion, leading to the head-on collision with the oncoming truck.

Two passengers were ejected from the Perodua Alza due to the impact, while six others were trapped inside. Emergency responders pronounced all eight victims, including the Malaysian driver, dead at the scene.

Survivors and Investigation

The driver and passengers of the truck sustained minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital. Authorities are investigating the incident under Section 41(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987, which addresses reckless and dangerous driving.

The Indonesian government is expected to coordinate with Malaysian authorities to facilitate the repatriation of the victims’ remains and assist with the ongoing investigation.
