Jakarta, IndonesiaSentinel.com — Sniper Teams were deployed by the Indonesian National Police (Polri) at various undisclosed locations in preparation for Pope Francis Visits, the head of state and leader of the global Catholic Church, from September 3–6, 2024. The deployment of these snipers is part of a comprehensive security strategy to safeguard against potential terrorist threats during the Pope’s visit.
Brigadier General Tjahyono Saputro, Chief of the Information and Documentation Division of the National Police’s Public Relations Department, stated that several covert positions have been prepared for the sniper teams. “There are several locations where sniper teams have been stationed,” Tjahyono confirmed during a press briefing at the Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Friday, August 30, 2024.
The sniper teams are being mobilized as part of Operation Tribrata Jaya 2024, which involves 4,730 police personnel. This includes 1,200 officers from the National Police Headquarters and 3,520 officers from the Metro Jaya Regional Police. These personnel will be divided into various task forces, including an Anti-Terror Task Force and a Response Task Force.
“Operation Tribrata Jaya consists of eight task forces, namely the preemptive task force, preventive task force, security task force, law enforcement task force, response task force, anti-terror task force, public relations task force, and support operations task force,” Tjahyono explained.

In addition to the sniper deployment, Tjahyono noted that a Tactical Floor Game (TFG) simulation has been conducted to rehearse the security scenarios from Pope Francis’s arrival to his departure for Papua New Guinea. “We have also trained for various situational scenarios, including the possibility of natural disasters or other incidents that could disrupt security operations,” he added.
In the lead-up to the Tribrata Jaya Operation, all the personnel underwent pre-operation training. Commissioner General Imam Widodo, the head of Operation Tribrata Jaya 2024, emphasized that the training was conducted to align the mindset and actions of the officers while enhancing their skills and capabilities.
The pre-operation training focused on ensuring a thorough understanding of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and effective field operations. Vital points highlighted during the training included early detection and prevention strategies, as well as risk assessments leading up to and during the operation.
