Jakarta, IndonesiaSentinel.com: Sony has announced a 19% increase for the PlayStation 5 price, set to take effect on September 2, 2024. This decision comes as the gaming console reaches its four-year mark in the market.
Currently, the retail of the PlayStation 5 price is set at 79,980 yen in Japan, which is equivalent to approximately $510 to $540 based on various e-commerce platforms.
Sony has attributed the price hike to external challenges, including global economic fluctuations, as reported by CNBC International on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

The price increase is currently limited to the Japanese market, with no confirmation yet on whether it will extend to other countries.
As the PlayStation 5 approaches its fourth anniversary this November, Sony’s decision to raise prices is both surprising and bold. This move comes despite a decline in PlayStation 5 sales, with only 2.4 million units sold in the second quarter of 2024, down from 3.3 million units during the same period the previous year.
Despite sluggish console sales, Sony’s gaming division has continued to perform well, driven by strong sales of games and other services. Investors are eagerly awaiting the release of a new PlayStation console to boost sales further. Analysts have speculated that Sony may launch a “Pro” version of the PlayStation 5 later this year.
