Bandung, IndonesiaSentinel.com — The Trigana Air plane skidded at Stevanus Rumbewas Kamanap Airport, Yapen Regency, Papua. The plane was damaged after skidded off more than 1 km from the runway.
The aircraft involved in the incident was an ATR 42-500, a twin-engine turboprop regional airliner manufactured by the French-Italian company ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale). Known for its efficiency on short regional routes, the ATR 42-500 is widely used by airlines in remote and difficult-to-access areas like Papua.
Seating Capacity: The ATR 42-500 has seating capacity for 40 to 50 passengers.
Flight Range: It has a maximum range of flight of about 1.500-2.000 kilometers, making it ideal for short, domestic routes like those found in Papua.
Aircraft Engine: The aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW127 engines, which provide strong performance for takeoff and landing on short runways. The ATR 42 certified aircraft only need minimum 900-meter runways to take off.
Design: The ATR 42-500 is equipped with advanced avionics and flight control systems and is considered a reliable workhorse for regional aviation.

Skided of Runaways at Papua
The Trigana Air plane incident occurred at Rumbewas Airport in Kamanap Village, Serui, Yapen Islands, Monday, September 9, at 10:40 local time. The plane with registration number PK YSP ATR 42-500 was originally about to take off for Sentani Airport, Jayapura.
The police revealed that the plane carrying the wife of the Acting Governor of Papua Ramses Limbong, Kerdina Ramses, has skidded off the runway by more than 1 km. The runway is quite long, it has 1,600 meters with a width of 30 meters which runway is sufficient for plane take off.
The plan carried a total of 42 passengers and six crew which has met the standard for take off. while the plan has suffered serious damage, it is confirmed that all passengers and crew on board are safe, with some injured, and are currently being evacuated to be taken to Serui Regional Hospital.
Incident Chronology
The Ministry of Transportation explained the chronology of the flight incident in a statement.
- Initially, the plane landed in Serui after flying from Biak at 10:19 local time.
- The plane then parked ‘stand’ at 10:21 local time.
- Then at 10:35 local time, the plane moved on land (taxi) to take off to Sentani Airport, Jayapura.
- Only one minute later, the plane skidded to the left with a position of 1,200 meters from the runway
So far there have been no reports regarding the cause of the plane skidding or aborted takeoff runway excursion.
