Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel – The Vice President as Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Acceleration of Papua Special Autonomy Development (BP3OKP) chaired a limited meeting to discuss Papua on Wednesday (26/4/2023).
At the meeting, the Vice President expressed concern regarding the situation in the past two weeks, where a number of Indonesian National Army (TNI) soldiers were killed during operations in Nduga Regency, Mountainous Papua Province. It was caused by violence from the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in the related area.
“In response to this situation, the TNI and Polri should strengthen a comprehensive strategy for Papua,” the Vice President was quoted as saying in a press release.
The Vice President believes that the TNI Commander and the National Police Chief have evaluated the operation and strengthened the measures by setting the operation status to ground combat alert.
However, the Vice President reminded that along with the security approach, it must remain consistent with a welfare approach based on socio-cultural and political-administrative to address the root causes and strategic issues in the six provinces in Papua.
To that end, the Vice President emphasized the importance of managing appropriate foreign and domestic communications, as well as the importance of strategic thinking studies to improve the formulation and implementation of policies on Papua in the future.
At the meeting, the Vice President also requested reports on the latest developments, steps that have been taken, and proposals for further handling from Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, Governor of the National Defense Institute Andi Widjajanto, Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto and other officials present.
