Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced plans to discontinue support for certain iPhone models starting next year. This means that by 2025, several older iPhone models will no longer be able to use the platform.
According to a report from CNBC Indonesia, WhatsApp will stop supporting devices running iOS versions older than 15.1, with the changes set to take effect on May 5, 2025. Users with newer iPhone models will still have access to the app, provided they are running the latest available version of iOS.
Affected iPhone Models
As of May 5, 2025, the app will no longer function on iPhones running iOS versions older than 15.1, which will impacting models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.
The decision to halt support will affect iPhones running outdated iOS versions. Specifically, the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus models are now over a decade old, and are limited to iOS 12.5.7 as their final update.
Currently, WhatsApp supports iOS 12 and later. However, with the forthcoming update, the app will require iOS 15.1 or newer to function.
WhatsApp is giving affected users a five-month notice period to adapt to the change. This timeline allows users to either update their devices where possible or explore alternative options if their hardware does not support newer iOS versions.

The decision to end support for older iOS versions stems from the need to leverage updated APIs available in newer operating systems. This move ensures that WhatsApp can offer enhanced features and maintain optimal performance for the majority of its user base.
Over the years, WhatsApp has prioritized broad accessibility by supporting older devices. However, to keep pace with technological advancements and deliver better services, the platform periodically reevaluates its compatibility with outdated systems.
The update aligns with WhatsApp’s goal of providing users with the latest features and security improvements, even as it phases out older, less capable devices.
