Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The launch of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, operating on the 6 GHz frequency band, marks a new era of digital connectivity in Indonesia. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) and the Indonesia Technology Alliance, a nonprofit organization comprising technology companies and professionals.

The introduction of these next-generation Wi-Fi technologies underscores Indonesia’s readiness to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the digital age. With faster and more stable connectivity, the country is positioning itself for a future driven by innovation and global competitiveness.

A Milestone in Indonesia’s Digital Strategy

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, emphasized that the adoption of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 represents a significant step toward aligning Indonesia with global technology standards. The launch also serves as a key milestone within the first 100 days of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, which prioritizes digital transformation.

“By adopting Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 on the 6 GHz spectrum, Indonesia is securing a strategic position on the global digital map. This is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to making digital transformation a national agenda,” Meutya stated at the launch event held at The Langham Jakarta on Friday, February 7, 2025.

Meutya highlighted that these new Wi-Fi standards offer speeds of up to 46 Gbps, lower latency, and improved performance in high-density environments. The enhanced connectivity is expected to accelerate developments in ultra-HD video streaming, cloud computing, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), and AI-driven automation.

“Digital transformation cannot wait. With this regulatory update, we are ensuring that Indonesia’s digital infrastructure is ready for the future,” she added.

Regulatory Framework for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 Adoption

The Minister stressed that connectivity is no longer an auxiliary need but a fundamental pillar of economic growth, education, and national innovation. To support this advancement, the government has issued two key regulations:

  1. Ministerial Regulation No. 2/2025, amending Regulation No. 2/2024, concerning the use of radio frequency spectrum under a class license.
  2. Ministerial Decree No. 12/2025, outlining the allocation of the 6 GHz spectrum and technical standards for telecommunications devices operating in radio local area networks (RLANs).

“With the opening of the 6 GHz spectrum, Indonesia joins a select group of Asia-Pacific pioneers in adopting Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7. This move will significantly enhance internet speed and reliability nationwide,” Meutya explained.

Ensuring Compliance Through Rigorous Testing Standards

To prevent interference with existing services, the government has mandated strict testing standards for devices operating on the 6 GHz band.

Meutya noted that devices can undergo compliance testing at Indonesia Digital Test House (IDTH) or the Telecommunications Device Testing Center (BBPPT), both managed by Komdigi. However, devices tested by internationally recognized labs under a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) with Indonesia will not require redundant testing.

“We are ensuring that all devices meet global standards and operate without disruption. Our streamlined and standardized testing process will allow industries to adopt this technology more quickly,” she said.

Collaboration for a Digital Economy

The Minister called on stakeholders across government, industry, and academia to collaborate in advancing next-generation wireless technology. She emphasized that Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are not just technological innovations but crucial drivers of Indonesia’s digital economy, fueling the growth of startups and tech-driven enterprises.

“We invite all parties to work together in building an inclusive and globally competitive digital ecosystem,” Meutya concluded.

The launch event was attended by key figures including State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Angga Raka Prabowo, and Chairman of the Indonesia Technology Alliance Justisiari Kusumah.
