During the “Made on YouTube” event held in New York City on Wednesday, the platform unveiled a set of AI-powered features designed to help content creators streamline their production process, potentially changing how videos are made, and even the types of videos that get produced.
One of the most notable features is the new “Inspiration” tab within the YouTube Studio app. This feature, which has been in limited testing for the past few months, offers creators video ideas generated by AI. It can suggest concepts, provide titles, generate thumbnails, and even create outlines and scripts for the initial part of a video.
YouTube describes this tool as a way to assist with brainstorming, but it can also be used to develop entire projects. Given YouTube’s focus on optimizing for its algorithm, these AI-generated ideas are likely to be highly effective at driving engagement.
Once creators have an AI-generated concept, they can utilize another powerful AI tool to bring it to life. YouTube is integrating DeepMind’s “Veo” model into its Shorts platform, particularly through the “Dream Screen” feature. This feature takes the concept of a green screen to the next level by enabling creators to use AI-generated backgrounds. While Veo can be used to produce full video clips, they are limited to six seconds in length, as AI-generated visuals tend to become erratic after that point.
Sarah Ali, YouTube’s director of product management, emphasized that while Veo is integrated into the standard Shorts editor and works as seamlessly as footage from a camera roll, it still relies on the creator’s vision to shape the final product. These AI-generated clips will also carry watermarks through DeepMind’s SynthID tool, along with visual indicators to show they were created by AI.

The rollout of these AI features will be gradual, with creators expected to gain access by late 2024 or early 2025. Beyond video production tools, YouTube is expanding its AI-based auto-dubbing feature, which converts videos into multiple languages. This capability will soon be available to a wider group of creators and in more languages. Additionally, AI-driven tools will be introduced in the platform’s “Communities” section, allowing creators to better engage with their audiences.
While these AI innovations could make video creation faster and more accessible, there’s a concern that they might lead to an oversaturation of AI-generated content that looks and feels similar. The new features offer powerful tools to help creators, but they also pose the risk of flooding the platform with repetitive, formulaic content. Ultimately, it’s up to individual creators to decide how to use these tools, whether as shortcuts for mass production or as ways to enhance their creative output.
YouTube’s broader strategy appears focused on making it easier for anyone to become a creator, particularly through its Shorts platform as it competes with TikTok and Instagram. By embracing AI, YouTube aims to simplify the creative process and increase the volume of content on its platform. The hope is that AI will empower creators to produce more videos with less effort, further lowering the barriers to entry in the content creation world.
