Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Indonesia National Narcotics Agency (BNN) dismantled 14 drug trafficking cases in February 2025, seizing a total of 1.2 tons of various narcotics. BNN arrest a total of 37 suspects, which could face the death penalty.

BNN Chief Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom announced the agency’s enforcement results, stating that the anti-narcotics task force successfully conducted operations targeting drug networks. The operations leading to the crackdown of 14 cases with the arrests of 37 individuals and the confiscation of a significant quantity of illicit substances.

Authorities reported the seizure of 1.2 tons of various narcotics including 201,290 grams of methamphetamine, 894,330 grams of marijuana, and 303,188 ecstasy pills equivalent to approximately 115,211.65 grams.

“Based on the total amount of narcotics confiscated, we have successfully prevented drug-related financial transactions worth approximately Rp1 trillion ($64 million) and stopped around 1.4 million people from potentially abusing these substances,” Marthinus stated during a press conference on Monday (March 3).

In addition to narcotics, law enforcement also seized several assets, including more than a dozen cars, four motorcycles, and a traditional boat used in drug smuggling operations.

While 37 suspects have been apprehended, six others remain at large and have been placed on the wanted list.

Legal Consequences

Marthinus confirmed that the arrested individuals would be charged under Articles 112, 114, and 132 of Indonesia’s 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a maximum penalty of death.

“The charges under Articles 112, 114, and 132 impose the most severe penalty—death. We hope that through the prosecution’s efforts and the judges’ deliberations, the sentences will be as severe as possible, ideally the death penalty,” he stated.

The drug enforcement operations are part of a broader initiative by Indonesia’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force, coordinated under the Ministry of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. Minister Budi Gunawan emphasized the government’s firm stance against drug trafficking, vowing to eradicate the illicit trade at all levels.

“We will take firm action against all suspects in accordance with the law,” Budi stated. “There must be no hesitation, we must be resolute in eradicating drug trafficking down to its roots.”

The crackdown on narcotics and associated money laundering operations is a key commitment of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration. The Anti-Narcotics Task Force will continue to intensify efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and curb the spread of illegal substances in Indonesia.
