Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Strong winds and heavy rains have battered Australia’s east coast, leaving more than 200,000 homes without power as of Monday. The severe weather conditions in Australia was driven by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which caused widespread disruption across Queensland and New South Wales.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred that hit Australia was classified as a Category 2 storm, packed sustained winds near its center of 100 km/h (62 mph), with gusts reaching up to 140 km/h (87 mph). The cyclone made landfall on Saturday night (March 8) as a tropical depression, bringing intense winds and heavy rainfall that lashed cities across Queensland and New South Wales.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli stated that the torrential downpours have inundated homes, leaving many residents stranded. The disaster also caused a major power outage across the states, especially in Queensland and New South Wales

Dangerous Weather

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned that the dangerous weather conditions in Queensland and New South Wales would persist in the coming days.

“The situation in Queensland and northern New South Wales remains critical due to flash flooding and damaging winds,” Albanese said. “Heavy rain, destructive wind gusts, and hazardous coastal conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.”

In response to the disaster, Albanese pledged government assistance, including financial aid for affected individuals and emergency relief efforts. He assured that authorities would mobilize every available resource, including civilian and military support, to help communities recover from the storm’s impact.
