Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Several celestial events are set to light up the skies this June, from daytime meteor showers to the Strawberry Moon. Here are five cosmic shows skywatchers not to be missed out.
Several phenomenon would grace the night sky of June. Some of these will be visible to the naked eye, while others will require a telescope or binoculars for the best view. Clear skies and minimal light pollution will be key to enjoying these phenomena.
Arietid Meteor Shower (June 7–10)
The Arietid meteor shower is set to grace the daytime skies this June, reaching its peak on June 10, 2025. Known as one of the most active daytime meteor showers, the Arietids originate from the constellation Aries and remain active from April 14 to June 24.
Despite being classified as a daytime event, some meteors can be seen just before dawn especially when the radiant point climbs high above the eastern horizon.
In Indonesia and other equatorial regions, the best viewing time is just before sunrise, when the sky is still dark enough to catch a glimpse.
While not as intense as nighttime showers, the Arietids still offer a compelling display for astronomy enthusiasts.
Strawberry Moon (June 11)
June’s full moon, known as the Strawberry Moon, will rise on June 11. Despite the name, the moon won’t appear red or pink. The moniker comes from Native American traditions marking the strawberry harvest.
In Europe, the full moon in June was traditionally called the Mead or Honey Moon, linked to midsummer honey collection and perhaps the origin of the modern “honeymoon.”
Summer Solstice (June 21)
June 2025 will also mark the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, bringing the longest day of the year.
On this day, daylight can stretch to approximately 16.5 hours, far above the usual 12 due to the Earth’s northern tilt toward the Sun.
The solstice, occurring on June 21, signifies the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and is a key astronomical event celebrated across many cultures worldwide.

Bootid Meteor Shower (June 27)
The next celestial event in June 2025 is the June Bootid meteor shower, active from June 22 to July 2 and expected to peak on June 27. The meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Boötes, with visibility increasing as the radiant climbs higher in the sky.
The Bootid’s radiant is circumpolar in some regions, meaning it’s visible all night long. Known for its slow and bright meteors, the Bootid’s intensity can vary significantly from year to year.
In Indonesia, especially around Jakarta, the meteor shower will be visible nightly from dusk until about 2 a.m. local time, when the radiant dips below the western horizon. The best viewing is expected around 8 p.m. WIB on June 27, just after sunset, when the radiant reaches its highest point.
Mars-Moon Conjunction (June 30)
Wrapping up the month, skywatchers can look forward to a conjunction between the crescent Moon and Mars on June 30. The red planet will appear close to the Moon in the night sky, an optical illusion caused by their alignment from Earth’s perspective.
This pairing will be visible without any special equipment, with Mars showing as a bright reddish point.
