Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — President Donald Trump announced plans Tuesday to impose a 50% tariff on all copper imports into the United States. The announcement immediately sent copper prices soaring to record levels.

The proposal was unveiled during a Cabinet meeting at the White House. “I believe we’ll be setting the copper tariff at 50%,” Trump said, as reported by Antara.

Following the announcement, copper futures surged to the highest on record, past $5.80 per pound before slightly decline to around $5.50 by market close on Tuesday, according to Trading Economics. While U.S. Comex copper futures jumped more than 17% on the day, also reaching an all-time high before falling more than 4% in early trading on Wednesday (July 9, 2025), as reported by Bloomberg Technoz.

If implemented, the measure would align copper with Trump-era tariffs already in place on steel and aluminum, both of which currently face 50% duties. The proposed tariff is expected to heighten trade tensions and add further volatility to the metals market.

After Trump’s announcement, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the policy could take effect by late July or August 1.

He stated that President Donald Trump was expected to release details via his Truth Social account on Tuesday. However, as of now, no official announcement has been posted.

The United States government argues the move is necessary to protect strategic industries and encourage domestic mining. Especially as copper plays a vital role in electric vehicles, electronics, and construction. Currently, the U.S. imports nearly half of its annual copper needs.

Chile, Canada, and Peru, the three largest copper exporters to the U.S., have urged Washington to reconsider, arguing their exports do not pose a threat to American industry. All three countries maintain free trade agreements with the United States.

For now, governments, mining companies, and trade associations around the world are watching closely, awaiting clarity on how and when the new tariff will be enforced.
