Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential extreme weather from September 27 to October 3, 2024, due to the seasonal transition, or “pancaroba.” This shift marks the end of the dry season and the beginning of the rainy season across several regions in Indonesia.

According to BMKG’s official statement on Friday (Sept. 27, 2024), the transition period is characterized by intense afternoon to evening rain, often following warm and sunny mornings. The rains are typically uneven and range from moderate to heavy but occur over short durations.

BMKG also noted that unstable atmospheric conditions could lead to the development of convective clouds, particularly Cumulonimbus (CB) clouds, which are associated with severe weather events like lightning, strong winds, whirlwinds, and even hailstorms.

For the next week, BMKG urges the public to remain vigilant and take precautions against potential hazards like short bursts of heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds.

Recent weather data supports BMKG’s forecast, as heavy rain (100-150 mm/day) and moderate rain (50-100 mm/day) were recorded in various parts of Indonesia over the past week. For instance, on September 20, heavy rainfall was recorded at Kalimarau Meteorology Station, East Kalimantan (139.0 mm/day), and similar intense rainfall was observed in Papua, West Kalimantan, and Bangka Belitung in the days that followed.

Additionally, BMKG has detected convergence zones and wind patterns that are expected to contribute to cloud development, particularly in regions like Aceh, the Malacca Strait, and northern Papua.
