His wealth stems primarily from his 20% stake in ByteDance, which has grown into a tech powerhouse with a valuation of over $300 billion. Early Life and Career Beginnings

In 2012, Zhang Yiming observed that Chinese smartphone users were struggling to find relevant information on mobile apps, while search giant Baidu often cluttered its results with hidden ads. Zhang had a vision to solve this problem by delivering tailored content to users through artificial intelligence (AI). This vision eventually gave birth to ByteDance, the tech company that would later revolutionize the digital world with platforms like TikTok.

ByteDance started modestly, operating out of a four-bedroom apartment in Beijing where the small team both lived and worked in the early days. Zhang recalls those beginnings fondly, noting that while the space was humble, it was “quite decent for a startup” and that the environment was conducive to their work.

Reflecting on that time, Zhang was inspired by a slogan he once saw at a construction site that read, “Small place, big dreams.” He applied this mindset to his fledgling company. “Our ideas were big. We could talk about globalization from a small apartment,” Zhang said, underscoring the ambitious vision that would soon propel ByteDance to global prominence.

The Rising Trend of Indonesians Seeking Citizenship in Singapore

One of ByteDance’s first products, Toutiao, a news aggregation app, gained popularity in China by using algorithms to curate personalized news feeds. This same AI-driven approach would later serve as the foundation for Zhang’s most successful venture: TikTok.

The Creation of TikTok

In 2016, ByteDance launched Douyin, the Chinese version of what would later become TikTok. Recognizing the potential of short-form video content, Zhang expanded the app internationally as TikTok in 2018 after acquiring the popular app Musical.ly. The platform quickly gained traction globally, particularly among younger audiences, who embraced its bite-sized, entertaining, and often viral videos.

TikTok’s success lies in its sophisticated algorithm, which curates highly engaging content for users based on their preferences and behavior. The platform has since become one of the most downloaded apps worldwide, boasting over a billion active users.

A Quiet Billionaire

Unlike many tech billionaires who seek the limelight, founder of TikTok, Zhang Yiming is known for his low profile. He rarely makes public appearances and prefers to maintain a quiet life, focusing on innovation and strategic thinking rather than public attention. His ascent to the 35th spot on the Forbes Billionaires List reflects his exceptional business acumen, yet he remains an enigmatic figure, largely out of the public eye.
