Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia, known as one of the largest archipelagic nations in the world, boasts countless breathtaking coastlines. Among the most famous is Pink Beach, located on Padar Island within Komodo National Park, East Nusa Tenggara. This extraordinary beach, with its striking pink sand, captivates visitors with its beauty and rarity.

Pink Beach, also known as Pantai Merah (Red Beach), is one of the few beaches globally to feature soft, blush-colored sand. Nestled on Padar Island, the third-largest island in the UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park, Pink Beach is often confused with another pink beach on Komodo Island itself.

However, the Pink Beach on Padar Island, frequently referred to as “Long Pink Beach,” is distinguished for its length and location on the island’s northwestern shore. While Padar Island is part of the same national park as Komodo Island, it is not home to the famous Komodo dragons, allowing visitors to explore its natural beauty without encountering the prehistoric reptiles.

In January 2024, Lonely Planet ranked Pink Beach 14th among the world’s top 20 beaches, highlighting its unique charm. “Few beaches on Earth boast cotton-candy-colored sand like Pink Beach, located within Komodo National Park,” Lonely Planet noted, as quoted by CNN.

The pink color of the sand in Pink Beach is caused by microscopic organisms called Foraminifera, which produce a red pigment on coral reefs. As the coral breaks apart, tiny fragments mix with the white sand, creating the beach’s signature pink color.

Nature’s Beauty at Pink Beach

The allure of Pink Beach begins the moment visitors set foot on its soft, pastel shores. The vibrant coastline, framed by simple beach huts offering refreshments and a place to relax, provides an idyllic escape. For those seeking a peaceful retreat, the beach’s serene atmosphere offers the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable sunset.

Beyond its stunning sands, Pink Beach also offers a vibrant underwater world teeming with life. The crystal-clear waters are home to an abundance of coral reefs, making it a hotspot for snorkeling enthusiasts. These reefs attract schools of tropical fish, creating a lively underwater ecosystem that is as impressive as the scenery above. For those eager to explore Indonesia’s renowned marine biodiversity, Pink Beach offers the perfect opportunity to dive into a kaleidoscope of coral and sea life.

A visit to Pink Beach provides a truly one-of-a-kind experience, blending rare natural beauty with an unparalleled glimpse of Indonesia’s rich marine life. Whether lounging on its rosy sands or snorkeling among colorful reefs, Pink Beach promises to enchant all who venture to its shores.
