Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A woman identified as HH (35) allegedly set her husband and her in-laws’ home ablaze on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The arson incident, which reportedly stemmed from frustration over her husband’s online gambling habit, led to a severe fire that consumed not only the in-laws’ home but also two neighboring houses.

Alor Deputy Police Chief Commissioner Jamaludin reported that the husband, Mario Agustinus Wendo, suffered extensive burns in the attack. “The victim sustained burns covering 80% of his body and is currently receiving intensive care at Kalabahi Regional Hospital,” Jamaludin stated.

The fire has destroyed two motorcycles, a car and neighboring houses. “Three houses were affected, with two completely destroyed and one sustaining damage to its front area,” he added.

According to police accounts, the incident unfolded when HH took a ride from Lantoka to Kalabahi. Upon arrival at a housing complex, she switched to a motorcycle taxi, during which she reportedly decided to confront her husband. On her way to her in-laws’ residence, she purchased four bottles of gasoline.

Once at the scene, HH confirmed her husband’s presence in a bedroom, where he was asleep. She then entered, doused him with gasoline along with the room’s walls and curtains, and locked the door from the outside before igniting the fire with a lighter.

“The victim was asleep and unaware as gasoline was poured over him,” Jamaludin said.

During questioning, HH reportedly admitted that her actions were driven by frustration over her husband’s secrecy around financial matters. “She confessed that she was angered after discovering a bank account used by her husband for online gambling,” he added.

The Alor Police Criminal Investigation Unit has secured evidence linked to the alleged arson incident, including a burnt door latch, four 1.5-liter bottles (two of which still contained gasoline), and a blue lighter.

HH is currently being held in Alor Police custody and faces charges under Indonesia’s Penal Code Article 187, sections 1(e) and 2(e), which could result in up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
