Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The kebaya, a traditional dress, has been officially recognized as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This designation, proposed by Indonesia, places kebaya on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The official announcement was made on December 4, 2024, during UNESCO’s intergovernmental committee meeting in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Intangible cultural heritage refers to living traditions and expressions passed down through generations, such as performing arts, social practices, rituals, and festive events.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted that the kebaya’s nomination was a joint effort by Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, and Thailand.

“This collaborative proposal demonstrates the spirit of cooperation and unity among Southeast Asian nations in preserving shared cultural heritage,” Fadli stated during a press briefing on Wednesday.

While debates initially arose over the inclusion of other countries—given the kebaya’s historical roots in Indonesia—UNESCO’s criteria focus on preservation rather than origin. Under UNESCO guidelines, any country that can demonstrate active preservation of a cultural element for at least 20 years is eligible to nominate it.

UNESCO describes the kebaya as a Southeast Asian garment characterized by intricate embroidery, often paired with fasteners such as brooches or buttons. It is worn at both casual and formal events, as well as in artistic performances such as dance, theater, and film.

“The kebaya is an integral part of the cultural heritage and identity of various Southeast Asian communities,” UNESCO noted in an official statement.

Global Recognition and Preservation Efforts

Fadli emphasized that the kebaya is more than just a traditional outfit. “It serves as a symbol of Southeast Asian cultural identity. We should take pride in wearing kebaya on various occasions as a way to preserve our heritage,” he said.

The recognition of kebaya as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage is expected to boost awareness about the importance of preserving such traditions. The garment has already gained prominence in contemporary fashion, appearing in international beauty pageants and cultural showcases.

“This recognition by UNESCO underscores the kebaya’s role as not just a cultural emblem but also a unifying element that transcends ethnic, religious, and national boundaries,” Fadli remarked.

Fadli added that the kebaya can foster intercultural dialogue, promote peace, and encourage respect for cultural diversity. He also highlighted the nomination’s emphasis on the kebaya’s contribution to sustainable development, inclusive economic growth, and poverty reduction.

“This milestone reflects the strengthened collaboration among proposing countries. I hope this recognition will inspire greater appreciation for the kebaya and ensure its preservation for future generations as a symbol of cultural identity and harmony across borders,” Fadli concluded.
