Tangerang, Indonesia Sentinel — The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has taken action against an unauthorized sea fence installed in the waters off Tangerang, Banten, following widespread attention and viral posts on social media.

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, the Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP) sealed off the area, citing regulatory violations. The decision was based on Article 4, Paragraph (1), Section (i) of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Regulation No. 30 of 2021 on Marine Space Monitoring.

According to report from TeropongMedia, the ministry has given the parties responsible a maximum of 20 days to dismantle the six-meter-high bamboo fence. If the deadline is not met, KKP officials will proceed with the removal themselves.

Ongoing Investigations

Pung Nugroho Saksono, Director General of PSDKP stated that previously a joint team comprising the Marine Special Police (Polsus) from the Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP) and the Banten Marine and Fisheries Office conducted an investigation in villages and districts near the site of the sea fencing.

“We are investigating to identify the owner and gather further information. Once confirmed, we will take the necessary legal action,” said Pung, during a visit to the site.

Pung emphasized that the fence is not only illegal but also disrupts the activities of small-scale fishers. “Initially, the fence was only seven kilometers long. By the end of the year, it had expanded to 30 kilometers. This cannot be allowed to continue,” he added.

Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that his ministry would issue warnings to those responsible if the fence was built without the required Marine Spatial Utilization Permit (KKPRL).

“We’ve deployed the Director General of PSDKP to assess the situation on-site and determine whether a KKPRL permit exists. If there isn’t one, we will issue warnings to those involved,” Trenggono said.

The sea fence in Tangerang has drawn significant concern due to its impact on marine navigation and the livelihoods of local fishers. The investigation is ongoing, and further actions are expected to ensure compliance with maritime regulations.
