Bekasi, Indonesia Sentinel — After the recent discovery of a mysterious sea fence in Tangerang, another such structure has been found. This time, it has been discovered in Bekasi.

A video circulating on social media shows a bamboo sea fence in the northern coastal waters of Bekasi Regency, West Java. The video reveals thousands of bamboo poles neatly planted at two points along the Tarumajaya area.

The bamboo is arranged in two parallel rows supporting mounds of earth, forming a long barrier resembling a levee, with a river-like expanse of water in between.

Local fisherman Tayum confirmed the structure’s existence, stating, “Yes, it has been here for the past six months,” as reported by Kompas on January 13, 2025.

Tayum explained that the land between the bamboo rows comes from dredged seabed material, which is being moved using three excavators that work around the clock. “After a long time, they finally expanded the fill to eight kilometers,” he added.

However, Tayum said he could not clarify the exact purpose of the bamboo structure. The origin and intent of the fence remain unclear and a subject of local speculation.

Ministry Response

Doni Ismanto, Special Staff to the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) for Public Relations and Communication, confirmed that the mysterious fence in Bekasi was constructed without the necessary permits.

“The KKP has never issued a permit (Conformity of Space Utilization at Sea) for the bamboo fencing in question,” Doni stated in Jakarta on Tuesday, January 14, as reported by CNN Indonesia.

He further noted that the Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance had already conducted an audit investigation to gather preliminary evidence from the site of the sea fence construction.

On December 19, the ministry sent a formal letter requesting the cessation of the unauthorized activity. They also issued a warning letter to the party responsible for building the fence.

However, Doni refrained from disclosing the identity of those behind the construction or the total length of the fence.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is still in the process of investigation and awaiting a response from the party claiming to be responsible for the sea fence in Bekasi. If there is no significant progress, KKP will escalate its law enforcement efforts.

“While we continue to investigate, our formal correspondence means the legal process is underway. Legal enforcement follows a series of steps,” he explained.

Tangerang Mysterious Sea Fence

The discovery of the sea fence in Bekasi follows the earlier revelation of a 30-kilometer-long bamboo fence in Tangerang. Like the Bekasi fence, the Tangerang structure was built without proper authorization, sparking concerns about its impact on traditional fishing activities and raising speculation about possible large-scale projects, such as land reclamation or development in the area.

Authorities continue to investigate the construction of both mysterious sea fence, with a particular focus on the motivations behind the project and its potential implications for local communities and marine ecosystems.
