Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Living in a city often offers unmatched convenience, opportunities, and cultural attractions. Recently, Time Out, a global media company based in London, released its list of the 50 Best Cities in the World to Visit for 2025.

According to Detik, Time Out’s ranking is based on the concept of livability, drawing insights from thousands of responses from residents across the globe. The survey considered factors such as happiness, safety, public transport, and local cuisine.

Cape Town, South Africa’s capital, claimed the top spot, scoring highest across various aspects, including food, beauty, and happiness. Impressively, 97% of locals said living in Cape Town brings them joy.

  1. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok earned its reputation as one of the world’s friendliest cities, often referred to as the “Land of Smiles.” Famous landmarks like Wat Arun and the Grand Palace offer visitors a glimpse into its rich history and culture.

According to Time Out’s survey, 86% of locals described Bangkok’s food as either “delicious” or “outstanding,” while 84% praised its affordability. The city’s vibrant energy and culinary excellence make it the top-ranked city in Asia.

Rank: #9 Globally

Shanghai is described as a “cinematic city” where people are free to express themselves. From groups of elderly women transitioning from tai chi to hip-hop in public parks to quirky local attractions like petting Fumin Lu’s famous alpaca, Shanghai offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity.

The city also stands out for its cleanliness, with low levels of air and noise pollution thanks to widespread adoption of electric vehicles. 80% of Shanghai residents said it’s easy to meet new people and form friendships here.

Rank: #14 Globally

Hong Kong was named the safest and most comfortable city in the Time Out survey, largely due to its exceptional public transportation system, praised by 98% of locals.

One of the city’s highlights is Hollywood Road, ranked as the second-coolest street globally. Here, visitors can explore the city’s heritage or ride historic trams.

Rank: #21 Globally

Hanoi, the cultural heart of Vietnam, has been a birthplace for the country’s most iconic poets, thinkers, and artists for centuries. Known for its strong sense of community, 89% of residents cited affordable options for dining, café-hopping, and entertainment.

Rank: #24 Globally

Known as the most beautiful city at night and home to the world’s tallest building, Dubai is also a hub for health-conscious lifestyles. Activities like yoga, hiking, pilates, and swimming are taken seriously, while its award-winning beaches add to its appeal.

Locals described Dubai as modern and safe, with the city ranking fourth globally for happiness and fifth for dining and quality of life.

Rank: #25 Globally

Despite its small size, Singapore is recognized for its safety and convenience. 80% of residents said the city is easily walkable, while 82% praised the high-quality public transportation system.

Rank: #27 Globally

Beijing continues to evolve while preserving its ancient heritage. The city recently unveiled its latest UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Central Axis, a 7.8-kilometer stretch through its core. Beijing scored highly in categories such as friendliness and quality of life. Locals described the city as both welcoming and modern.

Rank: #28 Globally

Known as the “Rose of the North,” Chiang Mai is the cultural hub of Northern Thailand. Surrounded by nature, the city is renowned for its handcrafted silver and silk goods as well as its affordable and delicious cuisine.

Jakarta, often viewed as Indonesia’s economic hub, offers much more than that. The city balances its colonial heritage, showcased in Kota Tua (Old Town), with modern skyscrapers and luxury malls in the SCBD district.

Time Out’s survey found that Jakarta is one of the best places to find friendship and romance, as locals describe their city as both historical and modern.

Rank: #31 Globally

Tokyo’s reputation for politeness, efficient public transport, and clean streets is well-deserved. The city is also home to numerous festivals and architectural wonders.

Despite its many strengths, only 14% of locals consider Tokyo “exciting,” and 70% said it makes them happy. Once ranked as the world’s third-best city, Tokyo has seen a slight decline in its global standing.

Time Out’s world best cities list for 2025 highlights not just the livability of these cities but also their unique appeal to both locals and travelers. From vibrant street food in Bangkok to the cultural richness of Jakarta, these destinations offer something for everyone.
