Severe Flooding in Jakarta: 35 Neighborhoods Remains Submerged

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Heavy rainfall since Tuesday (January 27) has triggered widespread flooding across parts of Jakarta, submerging dozens of neighborhoods (RT). While floodwaters in some areas start receding, some remains inundated by floods.

The Head of Jakarta’s Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Isnawa Adji, reported that as of Wednesday night at 8:00 PM local time, 35 neighborhood units (RT) in Jakarta remained flooded.

“As of 8:00 PM, 35 RTs are still submerged,” Isnawa said in Jakarta, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (January 29, 2025).

He explained that heavy rainfall in Jakarta and surrounding areas from Tuesday (Jan. 28) to Wednesday (Jan. 29) had caused rising water levels at several floodgates, triggering flooding in residential areas.

“Most floodgates are now at Alert Level 3, while floodwaters began entering residential areas from Tuesday night into Wednesday,” Isnawa added.

Affected Areas

By Wednesday afternoon, floodwaters had started to recede in several areas. The number of affected neighborhoods (RT) in Jakarta affected by flooding has dropped from 52 RT to 35 RT.

According to Liputan6, following neighborhoods are still experiencing flooding including:

In West Jakarta 33 RTs still inundated with floodwater, with water levels range from 30 to 80 centimeters. The affected areas including

  • Cengkareng Barat (2 RTs)
  • Cengkareng Timur (4 RTs)
  • Duri Kosambi (7 RTs)
  • Kedaung Kali Angke (7 RTs)
  • Rawa Buaya (4 RTs)
  • Pegadungan (3 RTs)
  • Tegal Alur (5 RTs)
  • Joglo (1 RT)

Meanwhile others area still affected by floods including, at North Jakarta with 1 RT in Rorotan, and at East Jakarta with 1 RT in Cakung Barat remains flooded.

In additions to the flooding in Jakarta, several major roads remain submerged, including:

  1. Jl. Muara Baru (near Pluit Selatan View, Penjaringan) – 20 cm deep
  2. Jl. Kamal Raya (Cengkareng Barat) – 25 cm deep
  3. Jl. Satria Raya (Jelambar, West Jakarta) – 30 cm deep

BPBD has deployed personnel to monitor water levels and coordinate with the Water Resources Agency, Public Works Department, and Fire and Rescue Department.

Severe Flooding Hits Jakarta

Heavy rainfall since Tuesday (January 27) has triggered widespread flooding across parts of Jakarta on Wednesday, January 29, submerging dozens of neighborhoods (RT) and forcing nearly 3,000 residents to evacuate, according to the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

BPBD reported that as of 6:00 AM local time, floodwaters had inundated 52 neighborhoods and 22 major roads. “The latest update at 6:00 AM indicates flooding in 52 RTs and 22 roadways,” said M. Yohan, Head of BPBD Jakarta’s Data and Information Center, in an official statement on Wednesday.

The most severely affected areas were in West and East Jakarta, with water levels ranging from 30 to 100 centimeters. As a result, displaced residents sought refuge in temporary shelters.

Evacuated Residents

BPBD Jakarta’s Head of Data and Information, Mohamad Yohan, reported latest data on the evacuated residents. Up to Thursday January 30, 1,990 people from 795 households remain displaced due to the floods.

The evacuees are from four affected neighborhoods including:

  • Pegadungan (West Jakarta) – 75 households, 300 people sheltering at Sawatul Ummah Mosque.
  • Tegal Alur (West Jakarta) – 310 households, 690 people sheltering at Al Madin Mosque (RW 015).
  • Rorotan (North Jakarta) – 160 households, 500 people sheltering at BCC Depot.
  • Cengkareng Timur (West Jakarta) – 250 households, 500 people sheltering at BCI Apartment, 2nd Floor.

Relief Efforts and Monitoring

BPBD Jakarta confirmed that logistical aid, including food, clothing, and medical supplies, has been distributed to affected residents. Meanwhile, BPBD with other agency’s continued its efforts to help reduce the water levels.

“We are working with local authorities to pump out floodwaters and ensure drainage systems function properly. Our goal is to clear the water as quickly as possible,” Yohan said.

BPBD also report that several floodgates remain in alert status Level 3. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge residents to remain vigilant as heavy rains are expected to persist in the coming days.
