Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its annual ranking of the world most liveable cities, naming Copenhagen the most liveable city in the world for 2025.
The Danish capital unseated Vienna, which had held the top spot for three consecutive years. Vienna now shares second place with Zurich, Switzerland, according to rankings published Tuesday (June 17), as reported by CNN Indonesia.
The EIU, a research and analysis division under The Economist magazine, evaluated 173 cities across five key categories including stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and culture and environment.
Copenhagen earned perfect scores in stability, education, and infrastructure, securing an overall score of 98 out of 100.
Vienna’s drop was attributed to a slight dip in its stability score, reportedly triggered by incidents such as a bomb threat at a Taylor Swift concert last summer that led to a last-minute cancellation.
Australia stood out with three cities ranked in the top 10 which is Melbourne (No. 4), Sydney (No. 6), and Adelaide (No. 9). Melbourne maintained its position, while Sydney rose from joint seventh in 2024. Adelaide rounded out the country’s strong presence in the rankings.
In contrast, Canadian cities saw notable declines due to lower healthcare scores, reflecting ongoing strain on the country’s healthcare system, including long wait times and a shortage of medical personnel.
Barsali Bhattacharyya, EIU’s Deputy Industry Director, noted that while healthcare systems globally are under pressure, the impact has been especially pronounced in Canada.
