Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Five museums in Jakarta will implement night visiting hours. Museums will stay open until 8 p.m. on May 10–11, 2025, as part of a trial run for extended operating hours aimed at increasing public access to cultural and educational resources.

The initiative, led by the Jakarta Department of Culture, marks a shift from the usual 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule and is intended to assess the feasibility of nighttime operations.

Linda Enriany, Head of Cultural Protection at the Jakarta Culture Agency, said the trial precedes the official rollout of extended museum hours, a promise previously made by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.

“This policy is designed to give the public, especially students and working individuals greater access to educational and recreational opportunities outside regular hours,” Linda said on Friday, as reported by Antara.

Five museums got extended hours include the Jakarta History Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics, the Wayang Museum, the Maritime Museum, and the Betawi Cultural Museum.

The evening openings are also expected to offer visitors a unique experience by allowing them to explore Jakarta’s history, art, and culture in a nighttime setting.

In a broader move to expand access to education, Governor Pramono also plans to extend library hours across the capital. Under his 100-day work program, several public libraries are slated to remain open until 10 p.m.

“Our commitment is to improve access to educational facilities such as libraries, parks, and museums, as part of our effort to ensure social equity in education,” Pramono said.

The pilot phase will begin with the Cikini Library and the HB Jassin Literary Documentation Center, both of which previously closed at 4 p.m. The trial has already been underway for the past two weeks.

According to Jakarta’s Library and Archives Agency (Dispusip), the extended hours will be gradually implemented at libraries across Central, East, South, West, and North Jakarta, depending on facility readiness and staffing capacity. The agency aims to eventually have all government-run libraries operating until 10 p.m.
