Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia Ministry of Digital and Communications (Komdigi) has identified 1,674 hoaxes circulating online over the past year. Among the hoaxes, government related issues ranked as second highest.
The figure was according to data from the Directorate General for Digital Space Supervision, covers the period from October 22, 2024, to October 20, 2025.
“There were 1,674 hoaxes in the digital space throughout the year,” said Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi, during the MediaConnect: From Clickbait to Credible forum held at Menara Bosowa in Makassar on Thursday (October 23).
According to the ministry’s data, November 2024 recorded the highest number of hoaxes with 166 cases, followed by July 2025 with 160, and August 2025 with 144.
The reported hoaxes were spread across various categories. Fraud-related content topped the list with 589 cases, followed by government-related hoaxes (341), and miscellaneous misinformation (249).
Political hoaxes accounted for 166, while health-related misinformation totaled 87. There were 68 disaster-related, 49 international, 42 crime-related, 41 defamation, 25 trade, eight religious, and five education-related hoaxes.

“Even the education sector wasn’t spared, there were five hoaxes identified in that field alone this year,” Sabar said.
Citing data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), Sabar noted that about 80% of Indonesians are now active in the digital space. He warned that while digital transformation has brought vast benefits, it has also amplified certain risks.
“Alongside all the advantages of our growing digital ecosystem, there are also threats,” he said. “These include data theft, hoaxes, disinformation, and other forms of cybercrime, even full-scale cyberattacks.”
