Indonesia Weather Alert! Heavy Rains Expected to Occur Ahead of Ramadan

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that Indonesia weather conditions in the lead-up to Ramadan remain influenced by several atmospheric phenomena, which could trigger heavy rainfall across multiple regions.

In its Weekly Weather Outlook for February 25 – March 3, 2025, BMKG forecasted that weather conditions in the coming week will continue to be influenced by several atmospheric phenomena. One of them is Tropical Cyclone Bianca, currently positioned in the southern Indian Ocean off the coast of Java.

Tropical Cyclone Bianca was detected in the southern Indian Ocean on Monday (February 24, 2025), with sustained winds reaching 65 knots (120 km/h) and a minimum pressure of 980 hPa. BMKG forecasted that the cyclone’s maximum wind speed could increase but would remain within Category 3 as it moves south-southwest, away from Indonesia.

Although not directly hitting the country, the cyclone is expected to contribute to cloud formation, increasing the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in parts of Lampung, Banten, and the southern coastal areas of West Java.

In addition to Tropical Cyclone Bianca, BMKG noted that a combination of atmospheric waves including Low Frequency, Kelvin, and Equatorial Rossby waves which could trigger extreme weather patterns in Indonesia this week. These phenomena may enhance cyclonic circulation and convective activity across large areas of Sumatra, western Kalimantan, Maluku, West Papua, and Southwest Papua, leading to more persistent heavy rainfall.

Weather Forecast for the Week

According to CNN Indonesia, here’s the weekly weather forecast ahead of Ramadan across Indonesia.

February 25–27 Periode: BMKG predicted cloudy to light rain conditions across Indonesia. However, moderate to heavy rainfall, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, is expected in the following areas:

  • Moderate to heavy rain: North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau Islands, Jambi, Bangka Belitung, Bengkulu, Banten, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, and South Papua.
  • Heavy to very heavy rain: Aceh, Riau, South Sumatra, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and Papua Highlands.
  • Strong winds: Maluku.

February 28 – March 3 Periode: During this periode, cloudy to light rain conditions will persist, but BMKG warned of a potential increase in moderate to extreme rainfall in the following areas:

  • Moderate to heavy rain: Aceh, West Sumatra, Jambi, Bangka Belitung, Bengkulu, Banten, Yogyakarta, East Java, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Central Papua, Papua Highlands, Papua, and South Papua.
  • Heavy to very heavy rain: South Sumatra, West Java, Central Java, and Papua.
  • Very heavy to extreme rain: West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

BMKG urged the public to stay alert for potential flooding, landslides, and strong winds, particularly in regions prone to extreme weather.
