Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Indonesian Embassy in Damascus (KBRI Damaskus) has declared a Level 1 security alert for all of Syria in response to the escalating security situation across the country. Previously, this heightened alert applied only to specific regions such as Aleppo and Hama.
The announcement, made on Saturday (December 7, 2024), was followed by a virtual meeting involving Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the embassy, and the Indonesian community in Syria.
In a statement by Judha Nugraha, Director of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities at the Foreign Ministry, the meeting aimed to provide updates on the security situation and outline contingency measures, including evacuation procedures if necessary.
Indonesian Nationals in Syria
Currently, 1,162 Indonesian citizens reside in Syria, predominantly in Damascus, with many working as migrant laborers, according to Syrian immigration data.
Given the volatile security situation, the embassy is maintaining close communication with the Indonesian community and providing regular updates. Officials have advised citizens to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and comply with local authorities’ instructions.

Preventive Measures
The Indonesian Embassy has urged citizens to keep travel documents accessible and ensure their contact details are up to date with the embassy. Preventive measures, including evacuation plans, are in place should conditions further deteriorate.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesian representatives in the Middle East continue to monitor developments closely to safeguard Indonesian nationals. The embassy has emphasized the importance of staying informed through official communication channels.
