Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky detected 19,171,977 web-based cyberattack attempts in Indonesia throughout 2024. The figures marking a 34.85% decline compared to the 29,426,930 incidents reported the previous year.

Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, stated that the number of cyber threats fluctuates rather than declining uniformly.

He attributed the decrease in attacks in 2024 to several factors, including advancements in detection and prevention technology, a shift toward more sophisticated attack tactics, a focus on higher-value targets, and increased investment in cybersecurity.

“This comprehensive explanation illustrates the complexity of the cybersecurity threat landscape rather than simply indicating an overall reduction in malicious cyber activity,” Yeo said in a press release, as reported by Bisnis on Monday (February 3, 2025).

Evolving Cyber Threats

Kaspersky highlighted a significant cyberattack a few months ago that targeted a cryptocurrency trading platform in Indonesia, resulting in approximately Rp300 billion ($19 million) in losses. The attack not only caused financial damage but also inflicted reputational harm on the affected platform.

In 2024, Kaspersky also observed a surge in “drainer” activity on the dark web. Drainers are malicious tools designed to steal users’ crypto assets, including tokens and NFTs.

Throughout the year, new drainer tools emerged and were actively promoted across dark web platforms. The number of unique discussion threads about drainers on the dark web rose from 55 in 2022 to 129 in 2024, reflecting increasing interest and deployment by cybercriminals.

Cybercrime Predictions for 2025

Kaspersky forecasts continued growth in cybercrime throughout 2025, including data breaches, ransomware attacks, and hacktivism.

“With Kaspersky’s latest data on Indonesia and last year’s dark web market trends, crypto enthusiasts in the country must be more vigilant than ever and adopt robust crypto security measures,” Yeo warned, as reported by CNN Indonesia.

He further predicted an increase in high-profile data breaches, fragmentation of ransomware groups, and the ongoing rise of hacktivism in 2025.

Strengthening Cybersecurity Measures

In response to these threats, Kaspersky urged individuals and businesses to enhance their digital defenses with reliable security solutions. To stay protected, the company recommends several key measures:

  1. Avoid downloading and installing applications from untrusted sources.
  2. Refrain from clicking on links from unknown senders or suspicious online ads.
  3. Use strong and unique passwords, incorporating uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, and enable two-factor authentication.
  4. Regularly install security updates.
  5. Ignore messages requesting the deactivation of cybersecurity systems for office or personal use.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, Kaspersky emphasizes the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures to safeguard digital assets and sensitive information.
