Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Golden Catering, a small and medium enterprise (SME) from Padang, West Sumatra, is set to export of rendang seasoning to Norway. The initial shipment, scheduled for February 2025, will consist of one ton of the renowned Indonesian spice blend.

Harti Ningsih, advisor to Golden Catering Padang, sees this as a major opportunity to meet the growing global demand for Indonesian cuisine. “Rendang is already recognized as one of the world’s finest dishes. Through this export, we hope local SMEs can continue to grow and expand their international market share,” she said, as reported by SumbarKita.

Golden Catering has previously supplied rendang products to several international markets. However, the strong demand from Norway highlights the dish’s growing potential on the global stage.

Harti noted that while one ton may seem like a modest start, the international demand for rendang seasoning remains high. “Rendang from Minangkabau is already well-known worldwide, and many countries are eager to try it. By exporting the seasoning, consumers can adjust the dish to their own taste preferences,” she explained.

Collaboration Effort

This milestone was made possible through collaboration with various organizations, including the Minangkabau Rendang Entrepreneurs Association (Hipermi) and the West Sumatra Regional Office of the Directorate General of Treasury. Hipermi has gathered 67 rendang producers, with a combined production capacity of up to 10 tons per month. This figure could potentially triple with the establishment of new production hubs in other regions.

“Collaboration between rendang entrepreneurs and supporting sectors is crucial. Not only does it boost the local economy, but it also positively impacts agriculture, which supplies essential ingredients such as coconut and spices,” said a Hipermi representative.

The export of rendang seasoning is expected to pave the way for more Minangkabau culinary products to enter international markets. Beyond strengthening SMEs’ competitiveness, it could also create new jobs and significantly contribute to West Sumatra’s economy.

As international market opportunities continue to open, Harti expressed optimism about the future for local rendang producers. She hopes that with further support from governments, exports will expand to reach broader markets across Europe and Asia.
