Police Uncover 26 Trafficking Cases in Central Java, Save 1,305 People

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel – Police uncovered 26 cases of Human Trafficking Crime with the mode of departure of Indonesian migrant workers in various regions in Central Java in recent times.

Deputy Chief of Central Java Police Brigadier General Abiyoso Seno Aji in Semarang said 33 people had been named as suspects in the 26 cases.

“The number of victims of human trafficking from the 26 cases handled reached 1,305 people,” said the Head of the Central Java Police Human Trafficking Task Force.

Of the total number of victims, he continued, 1,137 people had been sent abroad such as in Europe, America, and various countries in Asia. While the rest, he said, had not yet been dispatched abroad. The dozens of suspects who have been named, according to him, consist of companies and individuals.

“The suspects do not have permission to dispatch migrant workers or dispatch not in accordance with the specified documents,” he said.

He gave an example of migrant workers who were sent abroad but did not match their visas or passports.

In addition, he continued, there are also migrant workers who are employed not according to their expertise and not as promised.

The suspects in this criminal offense are further charged with Law Number 21 of 2007 concerning Eradication of Criminal Acts of Eradication of Persons and Law Number 18 of 2017 concerning Protection of Migrant Workers.

To people who intend to work abroad, Brigadier General Abiyoso urged them not to be easily tempted by the lure of large salaries.
