Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — A vintage Adidas product has taken Indonesian social media by storm. The item in question was a rare Adidas batik track jacket released in 2006 as part of the “Materials of the World” collections, which released three years before UNESCO officially recognized Indonesian batik as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The frenzy began after Instagram account @takeover_thrift posted the jacket for resale on Sunday, January 26, 2025. Only 1,000 pieces were ever produced, making it a highly sought-after collector’s item.

Moh. Aswin Hadi Nugroho, the owner of Take Over Thrift, revealed that he had been actively searching for the limited-edition piece. “I bought the Adidas batik jacket from an Indonesian collector. He needed the money, and I happened to have the funds, so I made the purchase,” Aswin explaining how he got the jacket, as reported by Liputan6.

Despite being second-hand, the jacket remains in near-pristine condition. “The colors are completely intact—there’s no fading at all,” Aswin noted, crediting its well-preserved state to the previous owner’s careful handling.

To ensure the authenticity of the item, Aswin consulted members of Adidas collector groups on Facebook before making the purchase. “I guarantee this product is original. I posted it in several Adidas communities, and after discussing with collectors, they confirmed its authenticity,” he explained.

The jacket has attracted significant interest from buyers, with the latest offer reaching Rp6.5 million (around $420). However, Aswin remains undecided about selling it. “Initially, I thought of pricing it at Rp10 million ($650), but if someone offers more, I might consider letting it go,” said the student from Pemalang, Central Java. “Right now, I’m still thinking it over.”

A Limited-Edition Cultural Collaboration

According to Hypebeast, Adidas launched the Materials of the World project back in 2006, drawing inspiration from traditional patterns and materials from various cultures worldwide. These elements were then incorporated into exclusive Adidas apparel and footwear.

The batik track jacket was one of four Indonesia-inspired items in the collection. Only 1,000 units were produced globally, alongside a batik cap and two high-top sneaker designs.

The design pays homage to Javanese batik-making, a meticulous craft rich in symbolic meaning. “It is said that whenever a batik artisan creates intricate patterns, the designs not only become part of the fabric but also leave a deeper imprint on the artisan’s soul,” the Hypebeast article noted.

Batik production is a labor-intensive process involving intricate dyeing and patterning techniques, recognized in Indonesia as one of the country’s six highest forms of artistic expression.
