Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — In March 2025, skywatchers will witness a rare celestial event known as the Full Worm “Blood” Moon. This phenomenon occurs when the Full Moon of March, traditionally called the Worm Moon, coincides with a Total Lunar Eclipse, giving it the distinctive name of a “Blood Moon.”
Worm Moon
The term “Worm Moon” refers to the Full Moon that occurs in March. This name, popularized by The Old Farmer’s Almanac, has origins in Native American, Colonial American, and European traditions. Historically, each Full Moon had a unique name reflecting natural seasonal changes.
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name “Worm Moon” originally referred to earthworms emerging as the soil warms in early spring. However, research from the 1760s suggests an alternative explanation, linking the name to beetle larvae often called “worms” that begin surfacing from tree bark and winter shelters as temperatures rise.
Blood Moon
According to NASA, the term “Blood Moon” refers to a Full Moon that takes place during a Total Lunar Eclipse. During this event, the Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon, preventing direct sunlight from reaching the Moon’s surface.
As this happens, the only light that reaches the Moon is refracted through Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out most of the blue light and allowing reddish hues to be cast onto the Moon’s surface. This gives the Moon a deep red or coppery glow, hence the name “Blood Moon.”

The 2025 Full Worm “Blood” Moon
This year, the March Full Moon, or the Full Worm Moon, will coincide with a Total Lunar Eclipse, making it a Full Worm “Blood” Moon. According to NASA and The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the event will peak on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 2:55 a.m. EDT (13:55 WIB).
According to NASA, the best viewing locations for this celestial event include the Americas, Western Europe, Western Africa, and parts of the Pacific region. However, the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN) reports that this Total Lunar Eclipse will not be visible from Indonesia.
