Seven Cultural Tourism Destinations in Indonesia

Holidays are the perfect time to do various fun activities outside of school activities. One of the recommended activities is cultural tourism. By visiting places that have high cultural value, you can not only have fun, but also increase your knowledge about the diversity of cultures that exist in Indonesia. Here are some places you can visit to fill your vacation days.

You may have heard of the Baduy tribe. This tribe resides in the interior of Banten and lives in isolation from the outside world. Their life is very simple and they are very integrated with the surrounding nature. The unspoiled natural conditions and the culture in the Baduy tribe village attract tourists to visit this area.

The Baduy tourist area is located in Cibeo Village, Lebak Regency, Banten, about 40 kilometers from Rangkasbitung. The village offers the charm of beautiful nature and the rich culture of the Baduy tribe which is still very traditional.

2. Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple is located in Borobudur Village, Borobudur District, Magelang Regency, Central Java Province. Borobudur Temple, which is the largest Buddhist temple site in the world, has been inaugurated as a Super Priority National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) by the government. This tourist spot is not only a favorite destination for tourists in the country, but also around the world. As of 2019, Borobudur has managed to attract more than 3 million tourists, including more than 200 thousand foreign tourists.

3. Bawomataluo Traditional Village

Bawomataluo is a village located in Fanayama Sub-district, South Nias Regency, North Sumatra, and is at an altitude of 324 m above sea level. The village is famous for its row of traditional traditional houses “Omo Hada” and one large traditional house called “Omo Sebua”. Bawomataluo Village is also famous for its culture, one of which is the tradition of “Jumping Batu” or Hombo Batu which is a hereditary tradition on Nias. In the past, the activity was a training for Nias youth to fight against the enemy.

4. Maimun Palace

Maimun Palace is a relic palace of the Deli kingdom located in Medan City, North Sumatra. The palace was built in 1888 by Sultan Makmun Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah and was designed by a Dutch army captain named T.H van Erp. The design of the building is a blend of Indonesian, Persian and European.

Maimun Palace was built on an area of 4.5 hectares. The building has an area of about 2,700 square meters and consists of two floors. Maimun Palace is divided into three parts, namely Balairung Seri Utama as a place for the sultan to receive guests, as well as the right and left wings consisting of 30 rooms. The construction of this palace is estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of guilders and was completed in three years.

5. Penglipuran Village

Penglipuran Village is a tourist village located in Bangli District, Bangli Regency, Bali Province. The village is located at an altitude of 600-650 meters above sea level so it has a cool atmosphere. In addition, Penglipuran Village is also famous for its cleanliness and beauty.

The architecture of the houses in Penglipuran is similar to one another, as well as their size. Each house has a gate called ‘angkul-angkul’. There are approximately 200 households in this tourist village.

In Penglipuran Village, all people have the same caste status, namely the Sudra Caste. They are led by a traditional leader who is elected every five years. Penglipuran Village offers a very peaceful atmosphere of life and harmony for the locals. Visitors can also get directly involved in learning about ancient Balinese culture, take Balinese dance lessons, learn about beliefs, and various other activities offered in the village.

6. Wae Rebo Traditional Village

Wae Rebo traditional village is located in West Satarmese District, Manggarai Regency, Flores. Located at an altitude of about 1,100 meters above sea level, Wae Rebo is an isolated village with a beautiful tropical forest panorama, surrounded by mountains, and bordering Komodo National Park. Wae Rebo is now a popular destination for travelers interested in ecotourism. The village won the Award of Excellence, the highest honor at the 2012 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Heritage Conservation in Bangkok in August 2012.

When visiting Wae Rebo, tourists can experience a variety of interesting activities such as interacting with the local community and staying with them for one or two days. In addition, visitors can also learn about the customs and lives of the Wae Rebo people and watch traditional penti cultural performances, if available. Not only that, Wae Rebo also offers stunning trekking tours with beautiful natural scenery, as well as unique local flora and fauna such as endemic Flores island birds that can be immortalized in the form of photos in the conservation forest.

7. Lok Baintan Floating Market

Lok Baintan Floating Market is a traditional market located on the Martapura River, precisely in Sungai Pinang village, Sungai Tabuk sub-district, Banjar Regency. This market is unique because the traders offer their garden, agricultural and household products from a boat or jukung that does not use machinery.

Lok Baintan Floating Market is thought to have existed since the 18th century. The majority of traders come from villages around the Martapura river, such as Sungai Lenge, Sungai Bakung, Sungai Paku Alam, Sungai Saka Bunut, Sungai Madang, Sungai Tanifah, and Sungai Lok Baintan.

Vendors at the floating market start selling at 6:00 am until 9:30 am. The majority of traders are women who wear wide headgear or tanggui. They can sell goods wholesale or retail. In Lok Baintan Floating Market, the barter system still applies, where the amount and amount of barter results depend on the agreement between the two parties.
