Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — The Indonesian government significantly increase its food security budget for 2025, allocating Rp155.5 trillion ($9.8 billion). The figure seen a Rp41,2 trillion increase or 36% rise from last year’s figure of Rp114.3 trillion.

The move is part of President Prabowo Subianto’s broader vision to achieve national food self-sufficiency, as outlined in his Asta Cita development agenda.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced the budget hike as a strategic measure to boost agricultural and fisheries productivity, strengthen food supply chains, and improve the welfare of farmers and fishers.

According to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, the total allocation will be distributed through several channels: Rp40 trillion for ministries and government agencies, Rp74.3 trillion for non-ministerial initiatives, Rp16.6 trillion in regional transfers, and Rp24.6 trillion in financing schemes.

Sri Mulyani emphasized that food security has been designated a top priority for 2025. The expanded funding is expected to bring a range of food security programs to fruition.

On the production side, the government plans to use the funds to subsidize 9.5 million tons of fertilizer, develop 225,000 hectares of new farmland, intensify cultivation across 80,000 hectares, build 20 new dams, and procure 77,400 pre-harvest agricultural machines.

For food distribution and reserves, the budget will cover the construction of 102 kilometers of rural farm roads, upgrades to infrastructure at 63 fishing ports, and the development of Red and White Village Cooperatives (Kopdes Merah Putih).

The budget will also used to support the strengthening of government food reserves and the expansion of state-owned food enterprises.

On the consumer end, the government plans to maintain food affordability and availability through Food assistance programs, low-cost grocery distribution, and subsidized markets and price stabilization efforts under the SPHP (Food Supply and Price Stabilization) initiative.

“With this increased allocation, we hope to realize food self-sufficiency while simultaneously improving the livelihoods of our farmers and fishers,” Sri Mulyani said.

The 2025 budget marks the government commitment in food security, signaling a shift toward long-term resilience amid global supply chain pressures and climate-related disruptions.
