Bali, Indonesia sentinel — A tragic incident occurred in Bali’s Monkey Forest on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, when strong winds and heavy rain caused several trees to topple, killing two foreign nationals and injuring another. The accident took place around noon in the popular tourist area located in Ubud, Gianyar Regency.

Victims Identified

The victims have been identified as Funny Justine Christine, a 32-year-old French national, and Kim Hyoeun, a 42-year-old tourist from South Korea. Another South Korean national, 43-year-old Lee Sunni, suffered serious injuries and is receiving medical treatment at a local clinic.

Chronology of the Incident

According to I Nyoman Lilir, General Manager of the Monkey Forest tourist site, the area was hit by sudden strong winds and rain around midday. Moments later, visitors and staff heard the loud crash of trees falling near Prajapati Temple, an integral part of the Monkey Forest complex.

The collapse involved a massive banyan tree, as well as a pule and kresek tree, which fell toward the eastern part of the site. Video footage captured by CCTV shows the chaos as visitors tried to flee the falling trees. Tragically, the large branches struck several tourists, resulting in injuries and fatalities.

Emergency Response

Staff from the Monkey Forest and nearby visitors immediately rushed to help the victims trapped under the fallen trees. Emergency services transported the injured to Kenak Medika Ubud Hospital via ambulance.

The local police, led by Ubud Police Chief Commissioner Gusti Nyoman Sudarsana, arrived on the scene around 12:50 PM. Authorities promptly began evacuation and cleanup efforts to remove the fallen trees and ensure safety in the area.

Safety Concerns and Investigation

The incident has raised concerns about safety measures in natural tourist sites prone to weather-related risks. Authorities are investigating whether the trees showed signs of decay or instability that might have contributed to the collapse.

Local officials have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the importance of reviewing safety protocols, particularly during Bali’s rainy season, which often brings unpredictable weather conditions.
