Bali, Indonesia Sentinel — Indonesia is home to the tallest bridge in Southeast Asia, the Tukad Bangkung Bridge located in Pelaga Village, Petang District, Badung Regency, Bali. Spanning between two hills, the bridge serves as a crucial connection for communities in the region.

The construction of Tukad Bangkung Bridge links three regencies: Badung, Buleleng, and Bangli. By replacing an older bridge situated 500 meters to the south, it has significantly reduced travel distances by approximately six kilometers.

According to official records from the Badung Regency government, Tukad Bangkung Bridge holds the title of the tallest bridge in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, with its highest pillar reaching an impressive 71.14 meters. The bridge itself stretches 360 meters in length and 9.6 meters in width, with its foundation extending 41 meters underground.

The Constructions

Construction of the bridge began in 2001 and was completed in 2007. It was officially inaugurated on April 28, 2007, by then-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). The project, financed through Bali’s provincial budget using a multiyear funding system, cost approximately Rp49 billion.

Beyond its height, the bridge is also renowned for its durability. Built using the balanced cantilever technology, it is expected to have a lifespan of up to 100 years. Its structure is also designed to withstand earthquakes of up to 7.0 on the Richter scale.

Breathtaking Scenery

While primarily serving as a transportation link, Tukad Bangkung Bridge has also become a venue for various public events. A designated parking area allows visitors to stop and take in the breathtaking scenery surrounding the bridge.

Travelers crossing the bridge can enjoy stunning natural views, and several nearby attractions make the area even more appealing. One notable site is Nungnung Waterfall, located just five kilometers from the bridge, offering visitors another reason to explore the region.

With its impressive height, sturdy construction, and scenic surroundings, Tukad Bangkung Bridge stands as both an engineering marvel and a cultural landmark in Bali. Beyond serving as a vital transportation link, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Bali’s natural beauty from a breathtaking vantage point.
