Kalegowa in South Sulawesi Indonesia Named One of Asia’s Top Slow Travel Destinations

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel — Online travel platform Agoda has unveiled its latest list of top slow travel destinations across Asia, spotlighting nine standout locations ideal for relaxed, immersive vacations. Among them is Kalegowa, a serene village in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, which claimed the second spot on the list.

The slow travel trend where travelers spend extended time in one destination, engaging deeply with local culture and community has surged in popularity in recent years, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many tourists are now favoring meaningful, slower-paced experiences over fast-paced itineraries.

Agoda’s rankings are based on an analysis of average accommodation booking durations from January to March this year. Indonesia claimed the second spot on the list’s, with the inclusion of traditional village Kalegowa.

Kalegowa, located in Gowa Regency, stood out for its tranquil rural atmosphere and rich Bugis cultural heritage. Often described as a hidden gem, Kalegowa offers visitors lush rice paddies, traditional Bugis architecture, and warm local hospitality.

The slower rhythm of life invites travelers to immerse themselves in daily village life, whether by exploring traditional homes, shopping at authentic local markets, or simply savoring the peaceful landscape.

Local cuisine is another highlight, with Kalegowa offering a variety of authentic Indonesian dishes that leave a lasting impression on those who visit. Visitors can stroll scenic trails, discover local crafts, and engage with residents in a way that feels both personal and genuine.

Topping Agoda’s list is Rayong, a coastal city on Thailand’s eastern Gulf coast. Known for its serene beaches like Mae Ram Phueng, golden mangrove forests in Tung Prong Thong, and the laid-back island atmosphere of Koh Samet, Rayong offers an ideal escape for those seeking peace and rejuvenation. Tourists can also unwind at Mae Pim Cape, swimming in clear, calm waters and enjoying the refreshing sea breeze.
