Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Traces Alleged Leak of 34 Million Indonesian Passport Data

Jakarta – The alleged leak of personal data of 34,900,867 million Indonesian citizens associated with passport data began to be traced by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo).

“Until tonight, at 20:00 WIB, the team is still working and so far has not been able to conclude that there has been a massive leak of personal data as suspected,” said Director General of Informatics Applications, Semuel A. Pangerapan, in his statement on Wednesday (5/7/2023).

According to Semuel, the conclusion was drawn after several stages of careful examination of the data in circulation.

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will certainly continue to conduct in-depth searches and investigations and the development of the results will be conveyed to the public later.

“The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology also coordinates with related parties in accordance with applicable regulations, namely the State Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), as well as the Directorate General of Immigration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights,” said the Director General.

Semuel emphasized that the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will continue to search and will release the findings after obtaining more detailed information.

In addition, digital platform providers are asked to improve the security of their users’ personal data and secure the systems they operate.

“The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology requests that all digital platform providers and personal data managers further improve the security of users’ personal data in accordance with applicable personal data protection provisions and ensure the security of electronic systems operated,” concluded Director General Semual.
