Bandung, IndonesiaSentinel.com — An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 struck the Gianyar area of Bali on Saturday, September 7. The tremors were felt for a few seconds and had caused the public and hotel residents to start panicking and running out of the building.

Based on the analysis results of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake that occurred at 9:51 local time was centered on land, located 2 km northeast of Gianyar at a depth of 10 km.

BMKG explained that was a type of shallow earthquake due to a land active fault activity. Source mechanism analysis shows a downward movement mechanism in the fault leading to an earthquake.

There has been no damage reported from the earthquake that hit several locations in Bali. It is also confirmed that the earthquake has no potential of causing a tsunami.

“The results of tsunami modeling with a tectonic earthquake source show that this earthquake has NO TSUNAMI POTENTIAL,” wrote the Head of the MKG Center for Region III Denpasar Cahyo Nugroho in his official statement.

As of 10:21 local time, no aftershocks have been reported. BMKG also appealed to the public to remain calm and not getting influenced by any issues that cannot be accounted for. BMKG also warns the public to avoid buildings that are damaged by the earthquake and ensure the safety of the house building before entering.

“Check and make sure that the building where you live is earthquake resistant, also ensure that there is no damage to the structural stability of the building before you return home,” said Cahyo.
