Jakarta Explorer: Free Tourist Bus Service for Easy Trip to Jakarta’s Iconic Sites

Jakarta, Indonesia Sentinel – One of the unique tourism experiences available in Jakarta is exploring the city aboard the Jakarta Explorer bus. This bus service, operated by PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) was a free tourist bus service designed for visitors eager to explore Jakarta’s famous attractions.

The service allows passengers to hop on and off at various stops, providing a convenient way to explore multiple sites in one trip. Visitors can enjoy the ease of sightseeing without worrying about navigating the city’s bustling streets on their own.

The double-decker buses run on routes covering some of the city’s top destinations, including the National Monument (Monas), Kota Tua, and Ancol.

Jakarta Explorer’s routes are themed around popular destinations and landmark. Currently, the service operates four routes, with other routes still undergoing revitalization.

Jakarta Explorer Bus Routes

According to PT Transportasi Jakarta, the four active routes include:

  1. BW1: History of Jakarta
    • Operating Hours: Monday – Saturday (10:00 AM – 6:00 PM); Sunday (2:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
    • Stops: Juanda Istiqlal – Bank Indonesia Museum – Kali Besar Barat 1
  2. BW2: Jakarta Modern
    • Operating Hours: Monday – Saturday (10:00 AM – 6:00 PM); Sunday (2:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
    • Stops: IRTI – Balai Kota 1 – National Library – DPRD DKI Jakarta – Tugu Tani 2 – Gambir 1 – Juanda Istiqlal – Monas 1 – Monas 2 – Monas 3
  3. BW4: Jakarta Skyscrapers
    • Operating Hours: Monday – Friday (6:00 AM – 5:00 PM); Saturday (10:00 AM – 5:00 PM); Sunday (12:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
    • Stops: IRTI – Balai Kota 1 – M. H. Thamrin 1 – Wisma Nusantara – Tosari 1 – Dukuh Atas 3 – Karet Sudirman 1 – Gelora Bung Karno 1 – Bundaran Senayan 3 – FX Sudirman – GBK Gate 7 – Tosari 2 – Plaza Indonesia – M. H. Thamrin 2 – National Museum – Pecenongan 1 – Jakarta Art Building – Monas 1 – Monas 3
  4. BW9: Kota Tua – Pondok Indah Kapuk (PIK)
    • Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday (10:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
    • Stops: Kali Besar Barat 1 – Buddha Tzu Chi – Gold Coast – Food Street – PIK 2 Pantjoran – Melody Gold – Opposite Food Street – The Piano – Fresh Market PIK – PIK Avenue

How to Use the Jakarta Explorer Service

  1. Check the Schedule and Routes: Visit Transjakarta official website or information centers at bus stops for the latest departure times and route maps.
  2. Locate Your Stop: Identify which stops offer pick-up and drop-off services. Most buses depart from Balai Kota or IRTI Monas.
  3. Prepare Your E-Money Card: Passengers must tap their e-money card when boarding, although no balance will be deducted.
  4. Board the Bus at Your Stop: Wait for the bus serving your route, then board and choose a seat on either the lower or upper deck for city views.
  5. Arrive at Your Destination: Disembark safely at your chosen stop. If you wish to explore further, you can rejoin the route at the next stop or complete a loop back to Balai Kota or IRTI Monas.
